On April 25, 2025, the delegation from the University of Kerala visited the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) in Havana.
The Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) is a pivotal institution in Cuba's foreign relations, dedicated to fostering international solidarity, peace, and mutual understanding. Established on December 30, 1960, ICAP serves as the official body coordinating Cuba's engagement with solidarity groups, international organizations, and individuals worldwide who support the Cuban Revolution and its principles.
ICAP's core mission is to promote friendship and solidarity among peoples, emphasizing the defense of sovereignty, self-determination, and social justice. The institute actively campaigns against the U.S. economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on Cuba, organizing global initiatives to raise awareness and garner support for the Cuban cause. ICAP maintains a robust relationship with India, characterized by mutual respect and shared values. In March 2023, ICAP Vice President Víctor Gaute visited India to attend the national conference of the Indian Organization for Peace and Solidarity in Chandigarh. During his visit, Gaute engaged with political leaders, including former Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid and members of the Communist Party of India, to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation in various sectors. In November 2024, ICAP President Fernando González visited India, where he met with students and members of the Cuban Solidarity Committee. His visit underscored the importance of youth engagement and the deepening of Cuba-India relations.
Prof. Girish Kumar and Prof. Sabu Joseph had a long and fruitful Interaction with the Vice President of ICAP, Victor Gaute. In the discussion, the CLAS Director, Prof Girish Kumar, proposed the institution of a Cuban fellowship for foreign students in the name of Commander Fidel Castro, towards Castro’s birth centenary, which would be celebrated on August 13, 2026.
