On Tuesday, May 6, the delegation from the University of Kerala visited the Marta Abreu University of Las Villas (Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas, UCLV), Santa Clara, Villa Clara.
Villa Clara is a central Cuban province with its capital in Santa Clara, a city famous for its revolutionary history. Santa Clara is home to the Che Guevara Mausoleum, where the remains of the iconic revolutionary leader are buried. The province also features beautiful northern cays, such as Cayo Santa María, known for white-sand beaches and luxury resorts. Economically, Villa Clara relies on sugar production, tobacco farming, and tourism. It is also known for a strong cultural identity, traditional Cuban music, and colonial-era towns.[i]
The Central University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas (UCLV) was founded on November 30, 1952, after Marta Abreu de Estévez, a 19th-century Cuban patriot and philanthropist. The Kerala University delegation, comprising Prof. Girish Kumar and Prof. Sabu Joseph, received a warm welcome at the UCLV, and they discussed with the leadership of the Marta Abreu Central University of Las Villas (UCLV).
UCLV has twelve faculties offering 54 degree programs. The variety of its undergraduate academic offerings positions it as the most multidisciplinary university in the country, training professionals in the technical, agricultural, pedagogical, economic, social, humanistic, exact, and physical culture sciences. It also offers 23 doctoral programs, 49 Master's programs, and five specializations.
UCLV has 12 faculties and offers 54 undergraduate programs, 44 master’s degrees, 29 doctoral programs and speciality programs which cover a wide range of disciplines, including technical sciences, agricultural sciences, education, economics, social sciences, humanities, exact sciences, and physical culture.
The Instituto de Biotecnología de las Plantas (IBP) at UCLV is renowned for its research in plant biotechnology, including somatic embryogenesis.
UCLV is involved in over 400 research projects aligned with national and regional priorities. The university also collaborates internationally with institutions such as Indiana University and others across Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
In 2016, Cuba's National Accreditation Board granted it the "Excellence" status. UCLV frequently ranks first among Cuban universities in web-based academic rankings. The university hosts major events like the International Scientific Convention, promoting sustainable innovation and stronger ties between academia and society.
