University of Kerala delegation at the University of Oriente (UO), Santiago de Cuba

On Friday, May 9, the University of Kerala delegation visited the University of Oriente - Santiago de Cuba (UO) in the Santiago de Cuba province. Prof. Girish Kumar and Prof Sabu Joseph conducted a fruitful discussion with the leadership of the University of Oriente, in which both parties agreed to initiate academic collaboration between the University of Oriente and the University of Kerala in the fields of biotechnology, social sciences, humanities, physical education, digital technology, translation and agronomy.

 

Santiago de Cuba is the second-largest city in Cuba and the capital of Santiago de Cuba Province, located on the island’s southeastern coast. Known as the cradle of the Cuban Revolution, it holds great historical and cultural significance. Founded in 1515, Santiago de Cuba is rich in colonial architecture and Afro-Cuban heritage. It is famous for its vibrant music scene, particularly son and trova, and hosts the lively Carnival of Santiago, one of the most important in the country. The city is also home to historic sites like the Castillo del Morro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Moncada Barracks. Santiago de Cuba’s mountainous backdrop and coastal location give it a dramatic landscape, contributing to its unique charm and cultural depth.

 

The Universidad de Oriente (UO), also known as the University of Oriente, is a prominent public institution located in Santiago de Cuba, the country's second-largest city. Established on October 10, 1947, it is Cuba's second-oldest university, following the University of Havana.

 

The UO is organized into 13 faculties, offering a diverse range of programs including (1) Humanities, (2) Social Sciences, (3) Law, (4) Educational Sciences, (5) Foreign Languages, (6) Physical Culture, (7) Construction, (8) Natural and Exact Sciences, (9) Economic and Business Sciences, (10) Electrical Engineering, (11) Telecommunications, Informatics, and Biomedical Engineering, (12) Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and (13) Chemical Engineering and Agronomy.

The university offers 65 undergraduate programs, 32 accredited and 15 designated Excellence programs. Additionally, it provides 53 postgraduate programs, including 15 doctoral programs, 30 master's programs, and 8 specialities
